I'm wanting to get an Otterbox defender case when I get my IPhone 4S, but recently learned they apparently make a Hybrid case as well. Does anyone know anything about these case and what the advantages/disadvantages would be as far as buying a hybrid case over a regular one?

So many case designs for these its best just to get the one you like at the best price you can find. Nothing protects your phone 100% but you, and your habits, so.

I like the encase slider and keep it in a leather pouch on my belt.

I have a case called the sharkeye. It has a little garage door like thing that slides down over the screen. I've actually had my phone knocked out of my hand, and it landed on a corner screen first. The screen wasn't even scratched. It works very very well, and costs the same as most other cases.
There is also a titanium case that, according to testing, can keep your phone from breaking even if run over by a truck. However, its 300 dollars. You're choice.

I guess 300 is worth protecting these, um, pictures or... Lol

I have an otterbox case for my iPhone, and it works really well. I highly recommend it. I don't know anything about hybrid cases so I'm not sure what they do or what the difference is.

On cases it depends on how offten you drop your phone. I'd not go with the 4S if I was getting a new phone. Why, unless money if a factor. The 4S is a great device and you'll love it, but if you can afford the 100 extra go with the latest.
Now on the 5 it will stand more dropping, but the 4S is pretty much made of glass. You drop it to hard you lose it period or crack it.
If you know you are clumsy with either get the protective type case. If not a nice wallet is good.
You can buy the insurence on the iPhone, but it doesn't actually cover as good as with other devices.
